I suffered from this terrible disease, I was on Tegretol (a drug) set for epilepsy, and left. Im not sure what triggers it, but .... TGH compression of the trigeminal nerve root by an abnormal position of the blood vessels is the most common cause of trigeminal neuralgia.
The pressure on the nerve leads to failure, causing pain. Sometimes the compression is caused by a tumor, and sometimes found no obvious cause. Feedback Other less common causes of trigeminal neuralgia, multiple sclerosis and stroke, the lower brain.

The drug Neurontin is useful for neuropathic pain. To the best of my knowledge, the cause is unknown, perhaps a virus? Avoid extreme temperatures, stress.
